Nancy Spungen Overview
Nancy Spungen was an American groupie, best known for her tumultuous relationship with punk rock musician Sid Vicious, the bassist of the Sex Pistols. Born in Philadelphia in 1958, Nancy was known for her wild and controversial behavior, which often led to her being banned from venues and getting into fights. She met Sid Vicious in 1977, while the Sex Pistols were on tour in the United States, and they began a tumultuous relationship which was characterized by drug use, violence and constant arguing.
In 1978, Nancy and Sid moved into the Chelsea Hotel in New York City, where they continued to use drugs heavily. On October 12, 1978, Nancy was found dead in the couple’s hotel room from a single stab wound to her abdomen. Sid was arrested for her murder, but was never formally charged due to his own death from a drug overdose in 1979.
Nancy’s death and the circumstances surrounding it have been the subject of much speculation and debate. Some believe that Sid was responsible for her death, while others believe that it was a drug-related accident.
