Amelia Earhart Overview
Amelia Earhart was an American aviator and pioneer of women in aviation. She was born in Atchison, Kansas in 1897 and died in an unsolved disappearance in 1937 while attempting to fly around the world.
Earhart began her aviation career as a passenger in an airplane and quickly fell in love with flying. She took her first flying lesson in 1921 and went on to earn her pilot’s license in 1922. She set several aviation records throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932.
Earhart was also a member of the Ninety-Nines, an organization of female pilots, and an advocate for women in aviation. She wrote a book about her experiences flying, called “20 Hrs. 40 Min: Our Flight in the Friendship,” and became a popular speaker, promoting the idea that women could be successful in the field of aviation.
In 1937, Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, set out to fly around the world, but they disappeared over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937. Despite an extensive search, no trace of the plane or its occupants was ever found.
Earhart’s disappearance remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in aviation history. Her pioneering spirit, courage, and determination continue to inspire many people today and her legacy as a trailblazer for women in aviation is still remembered.
